Sam Fox School students join international effort
to promote pollination

Bee populations are declining worldwide. Recently, four students in the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts worked with PAUSE, a multinational group of scientists, gardeners and beekeepers, to design a pollinator-friendly sculpture in Florissant Community Garden in North St. Louis County. The students are among 28 recruited from around the world.

Antibiotics prevent some hospital UTIs

Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common infections acquired in hospitals, with most linked to the use of catheters. New research suggests that some UTIs could be prevented if patients receive an antibiotic at the time the urinary catheter is removed.

University College offers three new degree programs

University College in Arts & Sciences has developed three new degree programs, including a master’s in statistics  — the only one offered in the St. Louis area. The other two programs are a bachelor’s in communications and a bachelor’s in journalism. University College will offer the programs this fall semester, which begins Aug. 27.

Missouri’s juvenile justice system in crisis,
report finds

Missouri has been held out as a model for juvenile corrections programs, but the court system that puts young people into these programs is in crisis, finds a recent report by the National Juvenile Defender Center. “Many young people in Missouri wind up having to defend themselves in our juvenile courts — and sometimes from behind bars,” said Mae C. Quinn, JD, professor of law and co-director of the Civil Justice Clinic at WUSTL.

Defects in brain cell migration linked to mental retardation

A rare, inherited form of mental retardation has led School of Medicine scientists to three important “travel agents” at work in the developing brain. Anastasio named interim chair of biomedical engineering

Mark Anastasio, PhD, has been named interim chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the School of Engineering & Applied Science. Anastasio, professor of biomedical engineering, succeeds Frank Yin, MD, PhD, who stepped down after leading the department for more than 15 years.

Celebrate Kathleen Brickey’s life at Aug. 30 ceremony

Join friends and colleagues next month in a celebration of the life of Kathleen F. Brickey, the long-serving James Carr Professor of Criminal Jurisprudence. Brickey died June 19. A ceremony and reception will be held at 4 p.m. Aug. 30 in Anheuser-Busch Hall’s Bryan Cave Moot Courtroom.
